OnePlus X: The newest OnePlus brings along 10 firsts for a OnePlus

The new OnePlus X may not have arrived loaded with high-end specs like the OnePlus One and its successor - the OnePlus 2 - but it still manages to stand out in the limited OnePlus portfolio.

Third in the OnePlus lineup, the new X handset is credited with bringing in a number of firsts for a OnePlus. And the price tag of Rs 16,999, making it the cheapest OnePlus phone, is the cherry on the top.

A compilation of what the X has in it that the One and 2 didn’t :

1. Glass back/Ceramic back: Unlike the last-two generations of OnePlus handsets that were introduced in Sandstone Black and Silk White (only for the OnePlus One), the OnePlus X comes with a glass back. This is for the first time that OnePlus has introduced a phone with a back made of black glass (Onyx).

There is another variant of the phone that comes with a Ceramic back, but before you begin to visualise, this limited-edtion variant also gives an impression of a glass back - but with less blacks. The glass at the rear of the OnePlus X is so glossy that it could also double as a mirror. In our opinion, this is the best-looking OnePlus yet.

2. Expandable storage: The OnePlus X may not have an internal storage as huge as the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2, but it allows you to expand memory using a microSD card. Featuring a capability to add more storage, it becomes the first OnePlus phone to come with a slot for a microSD card (up to 128 GB).

But the catch here is that the otherwise dual-SIM phone is left with support for only one SIM card if there is a microSD card installed. In other words, the phone has two slots that fit either two nano SIM cards or one nano SIM card and a microSD card.

3. OnePlus Radio: In what is said to have been added on request from users across India, FM radio finally makes its way to a OnePlus phone. With the addition of OnePlus Radio, the X smartphone becomes the first OnePlus phone to come with the FM capability. Like in most of the phones, it works only if the earphones are plugged in. There are, however, phones available that activate FM radio without needing earphones to act as an antenna.

4. AMOLED display: Taking a break from LCD displays, the company has included an AMOLED display in the OnePlus X. While the LCD display produces more realistic colours than an AMOLED display, the latter offers a wider contrast ratio.

5. First 'Made in India' phone: The OnePlus X (Onyx, one of the two variants) is the first phone to be assembled in India. Earlier this month, the company had announced its partnership with electronics major Foxconn to begin local assembling operations in Andhra Pradesh. Now the company says that the OnePlus X Onyx will be the first device to be assembled at the facility starting December.

6. Non-removable back: Unlike the last-two generations of OnePlus handsets, the OnePlus X doesn't allow you to remove the back panel. You can, however, snap a case at the back to personalise your device. The company has introduced five cases for the OnePlus X.

7. First phone in OnePlus' new lineup: The OnePlus X marks the beginning of a new product lineup for OnePlus. "With the OnePlus X, we aim to start a new product line," says Vikas Agarwal, general manager, OnePlus India.

8. First OnePlus with an 8 megapixel front camera: While the company has kept the same megapixel count as in the previous models for the Oneplus X, it has upped the count for the front camera from 5 megapixel in the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2 to 8 megapixel OnePlus X. Also, the company claims that the new OnePlus X has got the fastest ever camera on a OnePlus. This claim, however, is yet to be verified.

9. First 5-inch OnePlus: OnePlus X becomes the first OnePlus phone to have come with a 5-inch display, a size that we consider ideal for a smartphone. The older models sport a 5.5-inch display, and therefore, are not apt for single-handed operations.

10. The thinnest and lightest OnePlus: With a thickness of 6.9mm, the OnePlus X is the first OnePlus to fit into the sub-7mm category. Also, it is the lightest OnePlus made yet.
